Upgraded Revision3 Intern Status!

Jul 6, 2009 Author: ryantabora | Filed under: Interns, Office Happenings, revision3

Last week I started talking with Ron Richards (known for the awesome comic book podcast iFanboy) to figure out what kind of work he does at Revision3. Turns out he’s a huge piece of Revision3’s web backbone. I offered to help him out and just to my luck a spot opened up for a “Web” intern! I was offered the spot last week. So now I am not only the IT intern for Revision3, I am also the web intern! :D That means pretty much full time hours, which means a little bit more money for me to scrape by on, and also more knowledge to fit in my brain! Yay for me being an IT AND web intern!

Long Overdue Update Post

Revision3 Stuff

So pretty much the entire time here I’ve been working on their network monitoring system, trying to optimize the way it displays things and take advantage of all the different features the system has to offer. I’ve also been helping encode and upload the actual shows that we put out. I love all of it. Not only have I learned a lot of really cool stuff about unix and network monitoring, but I mean its frickin’ Revision3! In my opinion, the best and most comfortable workplace to work of all time. I love it here :)

A couple of other special notes about what’s been going on at work…

I went bowling with @camillastenmark, @jollyroger, @grahamhancock, @cam8 and @serafina. That was awesomely fun, and Camilla made a little video to commemorate our time there.

I had my photo/name dropped on Tekzilla. WOOT!

While the live Diggnation was going on in NYC, I was featured in a ‘We Miss You’ Rev3 video made by @maubrowncow

Also, I appeared on the Brian Brushwoods live video podcast, BBLiveShow.

I think that pretty much covers everything! I’ll try to keep this updated more often from now on…

Internet Television

My first day at Revision3 was yesterday, May 18th. I can already tell that I’m going to love it here this summer. Yesterday was mainly a ‘learning’ day. I spent time getting set up with my e-mail account, learning my way around the servers, and watching a few of the other editors work their magic. I also sat in the studio while they shot this coming week’s Tekzilla. (See Below).

Today (Day 2) was completely different. I jumped in head first and started to edit next week’s TekZilla Dailies when Mau (one of the staff editors) came by and asked me to do some edits to this week’s Diggnation (#203).

The edits were quick and it didn’t take me long, but the second task was to censor out some nudity in one of the videos that Kevin and Alex discussed in the episode, this ended up being pretty tedious–requiring a lot of tracking and rendering.

Lastly, the guys just got confirmation that they’re doing a live Diggnation in New York on June 4th, and I created a quick info billboard in Motion with a VO from Alex that plays just before the episode starts.

The office/studio was really busy today because Kevin and Alex were shooting next week’s Diggnation in the studio (Kevin and Alex hung around the office, too which was cool!) And then at 5pm Kevin and Jay went live with the Digg Town-hall in the studio.

All in all a pretty productive day. I almost hate that I have the day off tomorrow because I was just starting to get into a rhythm; I wanted to stay in later to finish-up the Tekzilla dailies!

Thanks for following!

10 Days Until Liftoff

May 1, 2009 Author: ryantabora | Filed under: Interns, Personal, revision3

Wow. This Spring semester went REALLY fast. REALLY freaking fast. Now in 10 days I’ll be moving to the ever exciting city of San Francisco. I’ll be living in the Yerba Buena Lofts located right in the heart of the Mission District, about a 10 minute drive, I’m guessing a 20 minute bike ride, or a 30 minute bus route away from where my internship is located, Revision3.

Where I'll be staying in SF

I can’t begin to describe the number of emotions that are going through my head. I’m about to live my dream, getting my foot in the door of my favorite industry where I feel like I would fit in and thrive. I’m going to be working at the company where some of my idols are everyday! But after all my giddiness and excitement passes, reality starts kicking in. I’m moving to San Francisco, California, by myself. I don’t know anyone there. It’s not like I’m studying abroad or living at a university where I’m going to have people my age and in my situation all around me. I’m taking what little money I have saved up and some loans and I’m doing everything completely alone. I’ll be leaving my family, my friends, and an incredible relationship which has just started to blossom. I’m going to miss everyone so much. I hope that I can stay connected with everyone while I am gone. I’m going to need your support!!

One of the ways I hope to keep connected is through this website. Just before I went to Guatemala I bought a nice video camera which I’m going to bring to SF and hopefully keep at least a weekly video update up. Who knows, maybe I’ll also start a little mini podcast! So please keep checking up on my website for updates. I leave on the morning of May 11th and I’ll be gone until mid-late August. Oh and if you haven’t heard about it already, I have a going away party on May 9th. Please come and visit me! Wipe my tears away as I say goodbye to everyone!

The Blog is Back (soon)

Nov 7, 2008 Author: Tyler Howarth | Filed under: Office Happenings, revision3

Hey everyone, sorry that this blog has not been as active as it should be.  We interns get pounded with so much work that we have no time for silly things like blogging (just kidding).  Anyways, the office has been a little crazy lately and there are a ton of new interns for the fall and winter so I think we can get this blog going again!  Videos and photos and more to come very soon!

Here’s a cool pic for your entertainment!

Suggestions for Intern Row

For a lot of you this is your first visit to Intern Row, welcome!  In the interest of giving you a reason for coming back, the interns all ears when it comes to suggestions.

Is there a certain topic you would like us to cover?  If so just leave a comment on this post and we will look them over and choose a few to write about.

We look forward to seeing what you guys come up with!

What Makes a Great Internship: The Culture

The internship and culture

The most important aspect of an internship is the knowledge and general experience you walk away with at the end of your stint. If you fail to learn a thing, and at the same time hate your time spent with the company, then your internship was a complete and utter failure.

The co-workers

Within my first week here at Revision3 I have hung out with all of my fellow interns and have gotten to know nearly every employee within the company. Each and every individual working at Revision3 is super friendly and open to helping out. This connection within the company makes the whole internship program a more personal experience. If I were separated and disconnected from the rest of the group the experience would be far less enjoyable.

Opportunity

A big difference between a great internship and a horrible internship is opportunity. The fact that I feel as if my ideas and suggestions are actually listened to is a major plus. Rather than having my emails deleted or my voice muted, Revision3 makes sure to listen to and provide feedback. Living proof of this concept? This blog!

Outside of the office

Playing off of the enjoying the company of your co-workers, team chemistry building is another aspect of a wonderful internship. After work this past Friday a heap of the Revision3 crew (those 21+) went to a local bar to grab some beer and hang out. This weekend I grabbed dinner with two fellow interns and went out to a party with a few other full-time employees. The relationships within the office are not restricted to the office.

I want to work

The fact that I woke up this morning and was more than excited to get to the office is a clear sign that this is the type of internship that I will be getting value out of. If you love your work, then it really isn’t “work.”

What do you think?

What makes a great internship? What kind of things make a great culture?
